I bought an iPhone 2G, and for the past six hours of trying various methods to get around error 14, it keeps coming back, every time. Is there a fix for this? Or will I have to go to the Apple Store? Because I plan on unlocking the phone, so, I don't think that's exactly the safest act...

Is it already jailbroken (and to unlock you have to be jailbroken)? If it isn't, you're in the clear to go to the apple store. Try redownloading the firmware... It seems someone said they downloaded the firmware and it got corrupted or was already corrupted upon download.
