I figured since it's possible (albeit hard) to emulate an entirely different system - like a gameboy advance on the Ipod Touch - emulating only a Firmware - should be much easier to write - and with significant fewer processing cost.

With such an app - you could run on 2.0 - all those apps from 1.1.4 - like ORB, ruBooks and many many others which are still due to be ported to 2.0 . Probably more than half would be never ported.

I think the analogy would be with a Virtual machine like VMware - except I believe such a firmware emulator would be easier to do.

Nope. Its been thought about, but I dont know if it can be done.

Emulating a firmware is NOT easy. At all.

    Easier to do?
    ...
    ....
The ones you are talking about aren't EASY TO DO, not to mention this would be SO MUCH HARDER.
    Running VMWare on iPod Touch?
    WTF.

Think about : Emulating a completely DIFFERENT machine - with different software, different firmware , different CPU..and so on . Impossible ? It's already been done on the Ipod Touch. With the emulators.

How about if you don't have to imitate / emulate a new CPU / new machine. Only a software / firmware ? Shouldn't cost much less in terms of processing power ?

If you see that it's possible, why don't you do it?

Less quality? 2.0 can bend down and suck my hairy bawls.

Really ? Maybe you didn't know what to install. All free :

    - Orb ? - streaming movies and songs to Ipod from your PC ?
    - iRadio with huge list
    - weDict - the amazing free dictionary
    - dropCopy for transfer between IPOD TO IPOD
    - Photoboard
    - Text Editor with copy - paste
    - ruBooks - read all kinds of TXT including PDF - Customize fonts, size, colors, landscape..everything
    - FileBrowser
    - MobileScrobbler for LastFM - (will be also a 2.0 version I heard)
    - MNPlight - you can listen to Radios copied from Winamp playlist - you can record radios straight in Ipod touch -as mp3. You can even listen to one radio station while record another
    - Categories
    - iPhysics
    - and many more Apps (like Level) which I won't add to the list because they are small but still useful on ocasions
