I don't yet have an iPod Touch but am leaning towards picking one up.

If I jailbreak it and install the iPhone mail app, I know it checks every 15 minutes by default but will it wake the unit to perform a check?

Will the iPod connect to a local Wifi connection to check mail when not in safari or the mail app?

Basically I want to know if I can use this as a blackberry'ish device when I have access to a wifi network and have it beep at me or something when mail comes in. (particularly if it will do this even when not otherwise powered up)

    Thanks

Not at the moment. The mail app only seems to get email when you open it. The touch automatically connects to a wireless network near you when it finds one but only while powered on.

ok, it does check every 15mins by default, but you can change it from 15 to up to 3 hours, or not at all. it doesnt wak up your ipod to check, it only checks while its on. and it will only check if you're already connected to wifi.

    Thanks much for the replies.

I don't think this will be a deal breaker, nice to have the details.
Hopefully someone comes up with a hack to implement what I want.

Yeah, it really isn't after all, you will still get your mail no matter what you do. Just need to add a place in settings thats all. The only problem with mail app in that sense is that if it has to constantly check it, it would put a huge strain on the battery life of the touch kinda like the listener on the SSH, which drains battery life pretty badly if left alone.

Um ... mine seems to recieve email in sleep mode. Test it, send yourself a song, turn your ipod to sleep mode, wait 20 minutes and turn it on. Your song is already downloaded.

My iPod Touch receives my mail when it's asleep - but not when it's powered off (top button, red slider).

You got to set the settings to Check every 15 mins, or 3 hrs or whatever.
