learn the pentatonic minor aka blues scale. then you can play with just about anything.

    okay, slight overstatement, but still.

ouch. I don't know of anything that can be played [well] without a fully-functional ring finger...unless you are Django Reinhardt or Tony Iommi

you could mess around with alternate fingerings, but I don't know how far you would get.

The easiest songs will be the songs you already know and like.

If you want the utmost in simplicity, try:

    e |-----5-5-7-7-5--|-3-3-2-2-0-0----|
    b |-3-3------------|-------------3--|
    g |----------------|----------------|
    d |----------------|----------------|
    a |----------------|----------------|
    e |----------------|----------------|

    e |-5-5-3-3-2-2-0--|-5-5-3-3-2-2-0--|
    b |----------------|----------------|
    g |----------------|----------------|
    d |----------------|----------------|
    a |----------------|----------------|
    e |----------------|----------------|

    e |-----5-5-7-7-5--|-3-3-2-2-0-0----|
    b |-3-3------------|-------------3--|
    g |----------------|----------------|
    d |----------------|----------------|
    a |----------------|----------------|
    e |----------------|----------------|

You should be able to figure out the tune as you play it. The last note of each measure should be a quarter note while the rest are eigth notes.

The pentatonic and blues scales are not the same thing. To comment on your point, The major scale should be far more useful than the pentatonic as far as noodling around the guitar and coming up with entertaining chord progressions.

I play guitar and have broken my fingers a few times it happens. Although substantially more painful is, within the weeks after nearly slicing my picking hand thumb off (with a tin can through the nail and straight to the bone), playing the guitar and having a string catch the slit in the nail and reopening the wound. This happened three times before the nail grew out enough that I could cut the slit nail the rest of the way across the finger, removing the offending half.

The point, don't let a minor injury prevent you from playing.

nah not really... To be honest, just make your own stuff up or learn a song you really like?
I would agree with learning the pentatonic and major scale as they are pretty much rudimentary in playing guitar, PLUS alot of the most well known song EVER can be played (or just the riff) using either scale.
But a sweet easy song that sounds cool.... Tribute, by Tenacious D haha...i think its 3 chords.... relatively simple stuff
