Hi people. If you are so inclined you can download a DIVX file, convert it to mp4, and watch the video all on the device- no itunes or desktop needed. It requires that you download several command line utilities that must be placed in the 'sbin' folder of your device - if you don't have them on your device already. Run the command line utilities using any method you like: e.g. Terminal.app

Download a divx (.avi) file from the web using wget

wget is a command line utility available from Erica Sadun's webpage:http://ericasadun.com/ftp/PortedUtilities/
    Erica you are a hero.

Convert the divx file to mp4 or mov using the ffmpeg command line utility.

ffmpeg is a command line utility available from the CoreOS iphone webpage: http://wickedpsyched.com/iphone/media
    Thank you wickedpsyched.com

put your file into (var/mobile/or var/root) and rename it a.avi (using mobile finder etc.)
use this command to convert it: ffmpeg -i a.avi -acodec pcm_s16le a.mp4 (using terminal etc.)

After about an hour or so your new file (a.mp4) will be ready to play.

You can play the movie using iphpPod (if you move it into the Downloads folder) or with the playaudio command line utility also available from Erica Sadun's website.

It might be possible to play the movie through mobileSafari before it finishes encoding so that you can watch while it converts.

Have fun if this is your cup of tea.

UPDATE You can also capture/watch streaming flash video.

PS. The above procedure can also be used to capture and watch streaming flash video on your iphone/touch.

Just substitute <your file name.flv> when invoking ffmpeg instead of <a.avi>

    Thanks

So we're not actually watching DivX videos, this is just a way of converting them into H.264 on the Touch itself...

here's the CorePlayer, an actual way of watching DivX encoded videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm0OqIrsLp4&feature=related

However, they haven't released it because they're waiting for the SDK to come out. So hopefully we'll see a downloadable CorePlayer out in less than a month from now.
