Put it into DFU and shift-restore to your 2.2.1 ipsw

Yes, you will be able to upgrade without paying again.

I works different on the iPod Touch 1g. The iPod Touch 1G downgrading is a lot more difficult than the iPod Touch 2G and the iPhone 3G. I found this guide which worked for me. Follow every step and it will definitely work.

This is not mine, but this will work.

You will be able to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.0 for free, so don't worry. Also this will only work on Windows. Windows only.

How is it harder on the first generation? You give nothing to support that claim. All you need to do is enter DFU mode, then Shift+Click / Option+Click (Mac) and select the 2.2.1 firmware file.
