So like many of you, I am also having troubles downgrading my iPod Touch 1G.

I was on the 3.0 beta, and now I want to just get back to anything, even 3.0, i just can't stand it being in restore mode forever...

So I try to restore, to 2.2 and to 2.2.1 and no luck, just preparing to restore for a long time then 1604 error. Tried all my USB ports on my PC (Vista) and i havn't tried on my Mac yet. But I will...

Anyway, the 3.0 FW was on my flashdrive, and well... i lost the flashdrive yesterday....

I have no luck. any help is appreciated...
please dont tell me really obvious bad answers because trust me i wouldnt have started a new thread unless i had gone through all of the obvious steps (other than trying on my mac)

    thanks.

    Plug iPod in

    Open iTunes

Hold both buttons for 20 seconds

Release power button, and hold home button until it pops up in iTunes as in recovery mode

    Click "Restore"

what you want to do is put your device in DFU manually. Then do the restore to 2.2.1 if you have the file onto your hard drive. which should say something like ipod2,1_2.1_SH11a_restore.ipsw Good luck man.

    It's iPod1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw, he's on a 1G. But he doesn't need to shift-click restore, just restore.

I don't think I'm putting it into DFU mode right, i think it just goes into restore mode...

When the ipod is off, i hold the home and power till the apple logo comes on, and then i let go the sleep button and then it goes to the cable and itunes logo screen and it says restore in itunes... then i click restore and it brings the ipod to the apple logo but then it fails and says error 21

put it in DFU mode and use iTunes 8.0.2, then restore.

    No, that's not dfu.

Do it exactly as I say, no extra button presses.

I did exactly what you told me, it was turned off, so then I held both buttons till the apple came on (15 seconds) then i released the power button and after about 10 seconds itunes came up and said it was in restore then i click restore and then it says error 21

You're doing it incorrectly. Plug it in, and leave it turning on. Nowhere did I say plug it in and turn it off.
