Make sure you have the firmware version you want to downgrade to.
Restore to the firmware somewhere during the restore you will get a error (1500) or (1050) if you get one of those errors you are on the right track!!!

Download a copy of iRecovery and lib usb .
install lib usb and put your iPhone/iPod in recovery mode

go to cmd and run the irecovery.exe with arguments -s

it should go to a shell if it does type: setenv auto-boot true
then type: saveenv if all goes well type exit and reboot phone you should now be on firmware you downgraded to

1.1.1 wasn't built for your device, meaning that hardware features (requiring certain drivers) do not exist on that build.

So i imagine that even if you could get 1.1.1 working on your 3rd gen iPod Touch, the side volume buttons wouldn't work, among with other things, such as the firmware not recognizing the processor, blutooth, and possibly even wifi depending on how 1.1.1 was built.

all in all, i would not recommend trying to go back to a firmware that isn't supported on your ipod.

So basically, I could go back to 3.1.3 on my iPod which it came on, without SHSH blobs backed up?

I don't think this method will work for new devices because apple still checks the SHSH blobs when restoring.

No luckily it does not have to be done on mac it can be done on windows to. Your device does not have had to be on the firmware you are downgrading to and you do not need to have SHSH Blobs backed up
