Is it possible to downgrade an iPhone 3G from iOS4 to 3.1.2? If so, how?
Yes. Use an older version of iTunes, like iTunes 9.1 and Shift-Restore to 3.1.2.
I've just downgraded mine to 3.1.3 from 4.0. I used the itunes 9.2. Shift restore to 3.1.3. You will most likely get the '1015' error. Ignore the error and close itunes. Run 'iReb' to get it out of recovery mode. I then jailbroke using 'redsnow' and unlocked using 'ultrasn0w' from cydia. Please Register or Log in to view images

Does this work?
This should work, as the error would restore it, but send it into recovery mode because it wants you to use iOS4, but use the program he suggested above, or for mac use RecBoot.
These two peices of software will take your device out of recovery mode, and are useful if you mess your device up.
I got out of recovery mode but now how do i jailbreak with redsnow? It says ispw firmware not recognized when trying to jailbreak 3.1.3
Use redsn0w 0.9.4 and select the 3.1.2 FW
I had the same issue when I downgraded from 4.0.1 to 3.1.3 on my 3G. It took me almost a day to figure it out. Wish I had read this thread. thanks! Please Register or Log in to view images
