First of all, to jailbreak it, is it required that I downgrade? If so, are there any downsides?

Nope, you do not need to downgrade. The downside is, well, you don't have the newer features in the newest firmwares. But this won't be the case when the 2G jailbreak is released. You have no worries.

I dont know, maybe a firmware later on with some good updates, something worthwhile, lack of compatability with new apps, etc.

but from the answer im guessing its a no? lol..

Dev team said further firmware updates won't affect the jailbreak.

You will be able to upgrade; the redsn0w/Ownboot exploit is at hardware-level and cannot be patched by future firmwares.
