Firmware 1.1.3/4 has better power management than 1.1.1/2, but the purchasing the apps shouldn't yield you any benefit, battery wise.

January apps package will not improve the battery life of the touch, infact if you set the mail app to anything other then manual it will make it worse, and of course the more apps you have on your ipod touch the quicker your battery will drain.

For maximum battery life don't jailbreak use a stock Apple touch.

If you have Jailbroken your touch then watch out for the following in order:-

Use WiFi only when needed - WiFi sucks battery power like mad even if the app you are using does not need it - leave Wifi off unless you need to use it

Turn off SSH unless you need it, BossPrefs from installer is good for this

If you have the Mail app installed set it to manual check for mail, any other setting drains battery

Avoid processor hungry games, emulators such as gpsphone, nes and psx4all suck battery because they use all the processor to run games - trying playing a game for five minutes on any of these and then check your battery, I bet 25% of the charge has gone!

Rememeber, the Ipod touch is an Ipod after all, if you want a long battery life use it to play music with the screen off.

Upgrading to 1.1.3/4 will improve power management. Buying the apps will not.
