A special thanks to commenter "tamade" for pointing out the obvious. Since AT&T's unlocked iPhone 3Gs will cost you $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB), you are better off signing a contract and canceling it than buying an unlocked iPhone. In fact, it's even cheaper to buy a 16GB iPhone using this method than to buy and unlock an 8GB version. But math isn't our strong suit so go ahead and double-check our calculations. We won't be offended:

    $299 - 16GB iPhone w/contract
    $36 - Activation
    $175 - Early Termination Fee
$70 - One month of service

Total Price Using The Shady Method: $580

    So...

    8GB iPhone Canceled: $480
    16GB iPhone Canceled: $580
    8GB iPhone Unlocked from AT&T: $599
    16GB iPhone Unlocked from AT&T: $699

    Are we missing something?

Lets hope there isnt a clause that says the phone belongs to them while in contract. I could see them doing that.

I haven't heard anything about an unlocked iPhone sale from ATT either.

Just got off the phone with an ATT rep and I asked him what if I cancel within the first 30 days, do I have to give the iPhone back. He laughed and said, "No way, you paid for it, you keep it."

He might be mistaken, but that is from ATT's mouth. Buy the iPhone, cancel within 30 days so there are no cancelation fees and keep the iPhone to unlock and go elsewhere.

    Thoughts?

Personally I just don't see how they can have not seen this coming. There must be measures in place to stop people doing this... I mean these people are not stupid.

you can now buy an unactivated iPhone 3G for $599-699 from Apple/ATT.

And this method sounds good, but I'm sure there is something stopping this from happening...

Also, why would you even buy an iPhone 3g now? Remember how everyone was angry at the first generation iPhone price drops? Its going to be the same case here.

No offense to the people planning on getting the 3G without a contract, but I have to admit I will laugh when Mortel ends up being right.

Because the Touch doesn't have a camera or speakers capable of playing music.

the whole idea behind it is people dont want to pay AT&T for their rediculously priced plans. They are hoping to unlock the iPhone and use their own carrier with it, at least that's what I think. (for the future).

    Plus its cheap.
