Does the iPhone Touch 2g have a diagnostic mode?

My non-jailbroken iPod Touch 2g worked relatively flawlessly for almost a year. However, in the last two days, it has "crashed" twice. It went into some bizarre restart mode where the Apple logo displayed, and no combination of holding various buttons for 10+ seconds helped. It remained in this mode for at least five minutes.

Since the warranty end-date is approaching, I'm a little concerned. Here's what I hope to learn:

    1) How can I access a self-diagnostic testing mode on the iPod Touch 2G?

    2) Is there any way that I can pay to extend the default one-year warranty?

    Many thanks.

Update - Scratch #2... I just purchased a one-year extension on the AppleCare Protection Plan.

I don't know of any diagnostic mode that the touch can go into. you can buy applecare to extend the waranty for another year, but I believe you must purchase it before the first year expires.
