It also says that audio is supported by all iPod Models. So those white rings don't mean anything.

How the hell are you still skeptical? They are right, the 1st generation touch doesn't have the hardware needed to support it.

The reason it works with the 2nd generation touch is because on the headphone jack, it has a "fourth" line, used for mic-in. The first generation touch doesn't have the "fourth" ring (the microphone-input, exactly like the iPhones'), it only has 3 rings. (Ground, Right-hand channel, and the Left-hand channel)

    Admit it, your an idiot!

The correct spelling, in this case, would be "you're." When you question another person's intelligence, you should at least make sure you spell correctly. Otherwise you just come off as a complete dolt.

Also, a ground IS NOT a line. It doesn't transmit a signal. It simply grounds the plug. Standard Apple headphones have two lines. Left and right. A ground will be on any plug - even a mono plug. It does not count as a line.

One last thing I'll point out is your final sentence should have a semi-colon rather than a comma.

Admit it; you're even more of an idiot!

Haha, pointing out spelling and grammatical errors to make someone out to be an idiot. I love e-drama.
He just mentioned that there were three "rings" meaning there were three contacts(ground, left, and right). There was nothing wrong with that statement.

heres a better view of the headphone plugs: http://www.turbozen.com/howto/iPhone headphone adapter/plugs.jpg

notice the iphone plug (the white one) has an extra contact, but that the first 2 contacts are still in the same place as on the non-iphone plug the tip of the iphone plug is left-channel audio, the next one up is right-channel audio. which is the same for the regular headphone plug. but the iphone plug has an extra contact. mic-in audio. the ipod touch 1G's headphone slot doesnt have support for this third area on the plug, therefore you cannot use it with the 1G ipod touch.
