I'm just wondering, does the iOS 4.2 fix the low volume issues that were occurring in the previous iOS firmwares such as 4.0.1, 4.0, & 4.1 to be exact? I been experiencing low volume on my iPhone 3GS ever since i updated to > JB/w ios 4.0.1 as compared to when I was using firmware 3.1.3 back then, my volume through my iPhone speakers and headphones were way louder

My speakers sound the same since the update. I know they changed the way volume and ringer volume worked. You have to change volume in app now by default. Volume buttons only work with ringer. You can change it though.

System and media volumes were separated, so... normally, if you have no app playing music in the background, changing the volume would change the volume of the system sounds (notifications, ringtones). If you have an app playing music in the background, like... say... the iPod app, then changing volume would change media volume (affects the iPod app and any other music/radio app) instead of system volume.

It's the equalizers that make it quieter, Apple needs to fix them!
