I think that the 3G might get a GPS chip that won't be usable until we upgrade to OS 4.0 next year. Just like what they did with bluetooth and the 2nd gen. IDK. What do you guys think?

They wouldn't put a GPS in, and make it unusable, like they did with Bluetooth. GPS chip would be too good of a thing to market.

However, they might limit its use to Apple-only apps...

You don't need wifi or 3G for GPS use! The GPS chip communicates with the satellites. They might put it in because the infineon gps reciever in the 3gs costs 2 dollars. And if it is there do you think apple will allow it to be used with the navigon gps app.

Unless there are locally stored maps; all you will be seeing is a lot of grey squares and a reassuring blue dot.

GPS can locate you, but you need to get the maps somehow...

Der-Kleine's summed it up pretty well.

Exactly, Locally stored maps. You can buy them via iTunes, for 9.99$ per region (or something...).

but do you think a gps will be included, or will apple save that for the 4G. The Zii has a GPS so apple should put one in the 3G, right?

Ever heard of the iPhone? If you want GPS, go get it.

If the ipod had a cam, mic, gps, no steel back etc. there would be hardly any difference between it and the iphone
