Do you have a case on it or anything? Sometimes the bulk from a case doesn't let you push the iPod all the way onto the dock.

Is it the Universal Dock? I have it myself and it works fine. I've heard of the iPod not being positioned correctly can affect it working as well. Try moving it around a little until it connects(or doesn't.)

As to you having 3.0, maybe. I heard Apple did change a lot in 3.0 with the dock/TV-out connections. But I've not experienced any problems.

its the official apple dock. no remote, but S-video out and audio line out....havent any use for the s-video out, but the audio out was going to be used to connect with my stereo. the ipod is correctly seated in the dock. do i have a defective dock that needs to be returned? or is it an issue of software?

    There is 3 options really.
    1) Wait for the 3.1 update and see if anything changes.
    2) Take it to an Apple store and have them look at it.
    3) Apply for a replacement from Apple.

I think you should try all three. In that order. Just my opinion.
