In my own experience I've found the screens to be very durable, and I haven't had a scratch on any of my iDevice screens. Do you think screen protectors are a gimmick? Are they an unnecessary product?

I don't think you necessarily need a screen protector. I also find the screens very durable and I haven't gotten a single scratch on the screen of my iPod Touch 4, and it's been well over a year! So my answer is no, you don't need a screen protector...but you do need a case. :p

Yeah the back is the opposite of the front when it comes to getting scratched.

Well, my iPod touch 2G had a shocking front screen, scratched so easily, but, they seem to have gotten better as time has went on. But the back, well, lets not go there.

My 2g screen is...basically unusable. My 4g I have tried screen protectors on but not for a long period of time, and haven't gotten any noticeable scratches (unless you look with a microscope).

I used to use screen protectors on my iPod Touch 3G, but I took it off about a year ago and no scratches!

I never used a screen protector on my 4G touch. Also dont have a screen protector on my SIII. Always use a case on both devices though

In my general instances, you can live without a screen protector. It's very hard to scratch the iPod Touch. There are ways to do it though. Sand for instance is a problem for glass as it can scratch it. That said, if you plan on going to the beach, get some screen protection. If you long or triple jump get a screen protector. If you are a carpenter and deal with metals (like iron filings) that can scratch glass, you may want to invest in one. Many of these items that scratch the iPod are very rare to see though in everyday life. Diamonds are another thing that can scratch it as well.

On my iPad I don't have one cause I just use it at home, but on the iPod Touch 4g I have one since I bring it everywhere. Pretty much depends on what you do with it like tinyman said.

Yeah I had to get a screen protector because I kept dropping my diamonds on my iPod.
