I've read sites such as this: http://www.installerapps.com/2008/04/16/10-ways-to-increase-your-battery-life/

that tell me to run the battery down, (some say even once a week,)

But I've been reading some posts here and they say to not run the battery down because it might ruin the battery.

Which one should I do? Will constantly running down the battery permanently mess up my battery life? Please help!

    Thanks,

The iPod is designed to be constantly recharged rather than run down.
Doing the opposite will cause harm to your battery life in the long term.

You should only run the battery down once a month, but only if your battery meter needs to be re-calibrated. Otherwise, just charge it whenever and don't let it run down all the time.
