Ok I got the 2g 16gb touch!!!! Best bday present ever.

I read that this thing has an awesome battery. However It is depleted very quickly and I would say after 2 hours of browsing internet, browsing apps, using apps it is dead.

Is that typical? I had my brightness set to auto. Should I bring it back to the Apple store for a new one?

That's because you were doing cpu intensive things like using apps, and the wifi uses loads of power when transferring data, but it's also the screen.
If you are listening to music with it in sleep mode, you get 30+ hours

There are probably alot of factors in play. Those battery tests are based off of a certain amount of factors, including temperature. It all really depends on what your doing. If you want the best battery for browsing and stuff, use less than 50% brightness, turn push off, and auto brightness off. You should be able to pull 4 hours out after that. WiFi is a battery beast.

    - Turn off Push for data (Set it to manual)
    - Turn off location services (When your not using it)
    - Turn off SSH, it runs in the background when you have wifi enabled, disable via bossprefs.
    - Turn off WiFi when not in use.
    - Turn brightness off from auto, and set it lower.
