This has been making the rounds over the internet, so I figured I'd see what you guys thought.

Basically, guitarist Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for copying parts of Viva La Vida from his 2004 song "If I Could Fly".

At first, I thought it was just some petty this, but I saw this youtube video and it is fairly convincing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ofFw9DKu_I

To me it seems pretty evident that it is copying, but at the same time I recognize the impossibility of every song being completely original. Still, the same tempo and melody?

    Thoughts?

interesting video. I really like the second part with the 2 songs at the same time. This could make a really good remix

How old is this song from joe satriani (I stopped at the "surfing with alien " album) ? Sooner or later you always find similarities between songs.

Yeah, it seems they did. Artist sampling is pretty common though, but at least give the guy credit!

That mp3 with the songs together is so sick though. No lie. I might PM that guy for it.

Why would it really matter that much? It's really only the beginning part to, If I Could Fly sounds different the rest...=p

It's a fairly basic melody, I think it's highly likely that it is entirely coincidence. I create riffs all the time that makes one of my house mates say "That sounds like _____". With the amount of music created, it's almost impossible to create something truly original. Sometimes things will sound vaguely familiar, every so often something might be almost identical entirely by accident. I can't see Coldplay blatantly ripping somebody off like this; they know that A. somebody on the internet would figure it out and B. they'd lose a lot of money. It wouldn't be worth the risk when they've proven that they can create hit record themselves without copying a 5 second melody. That and I can't see Chris Martin ever listening to Satriani

And I'm not just sticking up for Coldplay. On the contrary, I actually don't like them.
