Do you have iTunes installed? Turn up the volume on your comp & turn everything else off. Plug your iPod in, then hold [Power] + [Home] until the screen shuts off. About 2 seconds later you'll hear the 'device disconnect' sound, let go of the [Power] button & keep holding [Home] until you hear the 'device connect' sound.

I don't know why everyone has problems with putting their ipods in dfu. It always works for me on the first try. All I do is hold down both bttons for 10 seconds (counting in my head) then I release sleep button and continue to hold re home btton for another ten seconds (counting in my head). Maybe you should slightly vary the amount of time you hold each button down because I'm always hearing efferent amounts of seconds.

Few days ago I had the same problem too. But I finally made it.

I used a helper too, but it didn't really help.

I made it when I shortened the time holding both powerbutton and homebutton.
Try to release the powerbutton a second or two before the helper says you shall release it. It went ok for me =)
Listening to the sounds didn't work either...

I guess you have to get it in dfu mode, when you are "hacking" it for the first time...?

sometimes you wont hear when its in DFU mode. just put in DFU mode with the 10 sec, 8 sec thing and if you dont hear it dont worry reinstall libusb and you should hear the unplugged sound and the sound it makes when its plugged in.

first raise volume on computer high. hold power and home until u hear the "hardware disconnected" jingle/sound/beep. then release power, still holding home, until u hear jingle/sound/beep. to make sure, go to device manager and it should say "apple dfu driver" btw this is for windows, i dont know about mac
