I appear to have a faulty home button, which does not always work.

So is there a way I can enter DFU ON A MAC?

If you have a 2nd generation iPod, as your device panel says, why not just return it?
I wouldn't put up with a brand new device that has a faulty button, especially when the device only has a few buttons as it is.

Also, there is no way to enter DFU mode through software.
You can emulate it using WTF (send the WTF with iRecovery if you can get it into recovery mode), but this is not true DFU mode.
The only way to really enter it (and gain the benefits of DFU over recovery), is to use the hardware method.

iRecovery is pretty much like iBooter for 2.x.
You can download the Mac version here.
If you need a Windows one, PM me and I'll compile one for you.
Simply extracting a WTF from an IPSW and loading it (iRecovery -f WTF.n45ap.RELEASE.dfu or WTF.s5l8900xall.RELEASE.dfu, for example) should emulate DFU, but I'm not sure.
WTFs are shipped decrypted, but I'm not sure if sending and executing it (which iRecovery does for you, I believe) work the same way as 1.x.
What exactly are you trying to do, just restore?

Well, you're out of luck then.
You can't exploit a bug in the bootrom DFU by simply emulating it.
