I know what you're saying, but is it now bad to express one's opinion on an issue?

Anyway, spoonforknife and Teslanaut make excellent points and I will side with them on this.

I think a stickied, updated, Developer thread makes the most sense.

I absolutely see the pros and cons of having and not having "Developer Status" in the forum. I've had "Developer Status" over at modmyi for the last year and a half. And, I don't think I've posted anything over there in about the same amount of time.

Regardless, I have to disagree with having "Developer Status" here. The problem I have with it is that there are far too many beginners, bad coders, and idiots; and I would hate to lend any credence to the latter two. Take two cats who each make the same app. One's app is full of bad memory leaks and horrible performance flaws. The other cat's app is flawless: manages memory better than iPhoneOS manages memory, has no performance issues, and uses half the code of the first cat's. If each of these people have "Developer Status," then the beginners won't know who to believe.

And there is no way to weed out the good from the god awful other than by taking code samples. But that brings up the problems of "Who is going to look at all these code samples?" and "Is this person an ernest beginner or a completely clueless dev--and who decides that?" etc.

There is just way too many issues that arise to make the system good or fair.

Do you realize that you just called Erica Sadun not worthy of the title "developer"?

I so agree with Skylar, take me for intance, technically I am a devloper, yet I am a horrible coder and wouldn't want the title, atleast ubtill I learn more. I am sure there are many people like me, and some might want the tag.

I whole-heartedly support this idea (as if that means anything haha). The entire point of this is that you CAN have someone to trust. Without it, those "flashlight developers" are still giving advice anyways. Why not show some recognition to those who make real apps?

Skyler, if you were to select the actual developers, you wouldn't have to deal with the bullsh*t developers, you could only approve actual devs. This point is moot. Either way, crappy devs WILL give advice only this way the questioner can see if they should trust the answer.

    I say YAY!

Even if Skylar accepted Devs personally, nobody can 100% trust him. They would have to give him some code samples, and I doubt he has the time to look at all of the code samples given to him by every single person trying to get the Developer title.

My 2 cents. I think, personally, it is an interesting idea. However, Spoony's and Skylar's points are well taken. As iPtF is a very developer centric forum, where we are constantly battling against the prevalence of pirated App Store discussion, I think that further solidifying our pro-community and pro-developer stance through the set up of a Developer label could be useful. This would mean there would be a set of 'labelled' developers seen as being on hand to help out in the Developer forums. However, in line with Skylar's comments, it would be unfeasible to set up a badge for everyone who considered themselves a developer and so if it was to be considered it should only be for a select number who have shown attachments to the forums, the right attitude, the developer skills & profile plus the ability and willingness to help. i.e. the only system that would work would be a small Member Developer Team who's purpose was to be on hand to answer developer related questions. Though whether those developers would rather be working on their own code than answering a bunch of generally noob questions remains to be seen - I would think the majority would not, which leads towards the small core team idea. However, practically it doesn't seem worthwhile unless a small group were to put their hands up and say that they would set time aside for the forums and to help answer development related questions.

At the end of the day though it would be up to the developer mods, Skylar & Spoony, to get behind the idea, which they obviously are not, and then Bgizzle to sign off on the idea. Looks like a dead fish at this point.

Too many people would regard their new title as some sort of privelege. The same reason post counts were hidden . . .

I think we have enough people here who are devs and we know it? Why? Just read their posts. I don't know how many times a day gojohnnyboi posts that he's a dev. Do I care? Nope. If he gives advice on how to fix an issue, am I going to hold it in higher regard than advice from a non-dev that may have reached Savant level? You bet I am.

No more special titles, please. Those who have special titles are doing something for the forum (moderating, reviewing, etc.). What will the devs be doing to deserve a special title?

Developing the applications YOU all use on your devices.

I'm sort of torn between whether this is a good idea or bad now.
