Hey guys - I'm new to the game and have recently jailbroken my 3GS (3.1.2) with Blackra1n (untethered) on XP.

It worked an absolute dream until I got a little c*cky and began installing copious amounts of random junk. After trying a number of things: (Blackra1n, redsn0w, iH8sn0w’s iREB booter etc.) to get out of this endless bootloop that I now find myself in – I am led to believe that my only option may be to upgrade to 3.1.3..?

I used USB View and determined that my BootRom is: [iBoot-359.3] which seems to be a good thing?

Now I just need to know: (1) – Is this my only option? (2) - What is “baseband”? (3) - Will this be a problem for me? And (4) MOST importantly – Should I upgrade and can I jailbreak 3.1.3?

I have spent countless hours (days) on forums and youtube researching this matter, I really don’t want to make a mistake that I may regret! I would greatly appreciate any “professional” input and I’m really unsure as to what I should do next!
    Thanks..

ok leme start with the questions
    1. Your options are: Restore to 3.1.3 and be stuck until jailbreak or backup your SHSHs and restore back to 3.1.2 and jailbreak unteathered. To find out how to back up your sigs there are multiple tutorials on this site.
2."Baseband" is something to do with your carrier.
3.Unless u plan on unlocking your iphone this is not a problem.
    4. If u backup your sigs just jailbreak 3.1.2

Ok cool.. So I should try to backup my sigs/SHSHs before I restore? Or can this be done one I've restored? I think I have a program or two to do this!

I have downloaded 3.1.2 firmware however Itunes won't allow me to upload this to the phone.. Not happy!

Ok, so I backed up my SHSH's.. Easy!

The only strange thing is although I am running 3.1.2 firmware I could only save the sigs for 3.1.3, is that unusual..?

Well no.. Do I need to restore to 3.1.3 first, then downgrade to 3.1.2?

As I followed the walk-through and attempted to edit hosts etc. using 3.1.2 firmware in itunes, but it says that firmware is unsuitable? I am backed up on either Rock or Cydia, however I know for some reason (like in Umbrella) that my SHSH's are only being recognised as 3.1.3.. Given that I have the old bootrom can I jailbreak 3.1.3?

I apologise for my vagueness and thank you for your patience!

Apple have stopped signing 3.1.2 signatures so you can't back up the blobs.
