What are the dangers of using purplera1n to jailbreak my 3GS?
    what is the failure rate?
    will this void my warranty?

Nothing you do (anything) is risk free, but as long as you have the latest version for your OS, you should be in good shape.

People had been having issues with WinterBoard, but that has been addressed.

Jailbreaking does void the warranty, but at any time you may restore to factory settings in iTunes, and no trace of the jailbreak is left behind.

I'm not sure because i don't have a 3G but I'm sure the dangers are zero to none.
I have no idea about the failure rate.
And I'm pretty sure all jailbreaking voids your warranty, but it's easily removed by restoring.

so if I restore my iPhone there is no trace of the JB at all?
I have OS 10.5.6, is that OK to JB on(19.5.7 is out )?
is the act of jailbreaking illegal?

    thank you for your help.

Just restore to factory settings and set up as a New iPod (do not restore from a backup).

The JB doesn't require DFU, so 10.5.6 is ok.

Apple claims jailbreaking is in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), but no, jailbreaking is not illegal.

If you follow the simple instructions, your risk is virtually zero.

all you have to do for purplera1n is plug your iphone in and click a button, then click the "freeze" button. and its done! really is that easy nothing can go wrong, no holding buttons for 30 seconds etc
