hey all, just figured this out.

if you have your springboard set up so there are no icons on the screen and only your dock icons, and you use the app dock to get to all your other apps, you probably dislike the stock icons it uses.

well to change it, sftp into your ipod.

    go into the /Applications folder

go to whatever app you want to change, so lets say /Applications/Maps.app

    then find the file icon.png

replace it with a custom icon named icon.png (capitalization is important)

    restart springboard

check out your new icon in the dock!

i've been trying to change the display name of the apps, so far i've been able to get a custom name to show up in dock but not on the springboard. and it crashes...but i'm trying

Yes, this will work, but it's a little permanent. Make sure to back up any icons that you may be changing.

I still prefer to go in and edit the N45AP.plist file so all the apps I want hidden are in the special key, as it's not really all that complicated and takes almost no time.

Yet another way to do this would be to use rSBT form within Customize and move everything to Hidden except for the Dock icons.

As far as changing app names, have you tried modifying the info.plist for each app? I'd imagine changing the key with the name to the new name might take care of this. But again, this is only a guess.

    For example: try changing
    HTML:
    <key>CFBundleName</key>
    <string>Apollo</string>
    to
    HTML:
    <key>CFBundleName</key>
    <string>TheNewName</string>
    might just work.

but, the name only changes in the dock app.

so far no luck, but i'm gonna keep playing around

Here's a thought. Change the language on your iPod from English to something else. Then go back in and try to spot any differences.
