i was browsing through the filesystem on my ipod,
and suddenly i came accross this file:
    /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/PowerManagement.bundle/com.apple.SystemPowerProfileDefaults.plist
if you have a look at it, you will see that it contains three power profiles: battery, ac power and ups power.

inside each of these power profiles, there is : <key>Reduce Processor Speed</key>
with an integer value. 0 means do not limit it, 1 means limit it. it is set to limit it with ups power and battery power. but not with ac power.

just my 2 cents on the cpu speed

actually i tested it, changed the integer to 0 with battery power, rebooted, sysinfo showed me 412mhz, but i'm going to leave it like that.
gives me the feeling it is faster

probably limited to reduce battery drain but can run at full speed when plugged in to the mains. let us know if you notice any diffrence in battery drain.
