Could you buy an iPhone and not activate it, so that you could just use it as an iTouch? I was wondering if this would be possible since the iPhone is way cheaper and it has a camera and microphone. If you can do this, then where would you buy the iPhone without having to activate it?

You can jailbreak and hacktivate it. Thing is, an iPod touch is much cheaper.

You have to open a plan to get the cheap pricing.

I think the cheapest you can get a 3GS from a store would be 470ish from the ATT store for 16gb. That's like, 200 for phone, something for activation fee, and then something for early termination of a plan

If you can, buy a Pay as you go version.

    Remove the SIM.

Use redsn0w to jailbreak it and when its finished it will be "activated"

Cheapest is 411 to be exact, 200 for the phone, 175 for the ETF, 36 for the activation fee, but I'm not sure if you have to pay tax, or the first month's contract.

    It may seem cheaper.

You can get an iPhone for $200+36 activation fee, the iPod Touch will cost...$300+?.

So yeah, if you're initally opening an account and work for ATT and get your service free, the iPhone is cheaper.

For the rest of us, while the iPhone is cheaper WITH CONTRACT, the contract is the pricey part, not the phone itself
