Hello, I am new to the converting movies for iPod as I have only ever had the Old iPod nano which doesnt support video.

I am soon to get a iPod Touch and would like to know how to convert and compress these movies as I would like to have as much as possible on my iPod touch.

It would be helpful if you could list the programs needed and how I can use them to maximise the compression and what not.

    Many thanks

Formats supported by the touch http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/specs.html

On my Mac, I use ffmpegX to convert my movies into mp4 mov files. It'll let you customize bitrate of the video and the audio, scale down the size... etc etc.

I believe ffmpeg is compatible with Windows and Linux if that's your thing.

Thank you that helps a lot, but I was also wondering what program to use to rip the files off the DVD onto my computer.

When I do this it rips all the files into separate sections and I do not know how to merge all these files together, is there an easier program? I currently use DVD Shrink

    Thank you.

DVD FAB HD Decryptor is free, and is constantly updated to keep up with the latest copy protections. This program also runs on my Mac virtual machine.

I use MediaCoder. it is a bit technical, but if you know all the fancy terms you should be fine. It converts virtually anything to anything else, with any imaginable settings.... and the best part is that it is opensource [its free + no limitations + no viruses]
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediacoder/

However, there are others that are far simpler if all you need is to convert for ipod touch, like the ones previously mentioned.

Ok now that I understand I will help others by posting the links to said Video Converters and what not.
The latest versions for these programs are:
Videora Converter for iPod Touch: 3.05
Videora works very well and you can specify what video and audio quality you would like if size/quality is a issue for you.
    DVD Decrypter: 3.5.4.0 FINAL VERSION
    DVDFab: 4.0.1.12

Here you will find the neccessary program to rip files off DVD's

Once you have the files saved you will need to use Videora Converter, on the website it shows your how to use DVD Decrypter to maximise your iPod video quality and such.
Here is the link on how to use DVD Decrypter for iPod Touch: http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/guide/dvd-to-ipod/

And here is the Videora Program itself: http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod-touch/

For more recent DVD's it might be appropriate to use frequently updated DVD Decrypting or Ripping software.

A good one I have tested out is one that Eragon recommended which is DVDFab HD Decrypter:
    http://www.dvdfab.com/

I have tested this Decrypter out and it work wonderfully, the bonus is it is updated regulary

    If you want to know how to just rip the DVD files into ONE file for iPod converting then just use this tutorial which is easily found on the DVDFab tutorials page;
    http://www.dvdfab.com/docs/index.php/Main/DVDToDVDMainMovie

The bonus with DVDFab is you can rip dvd's and convert them straight away for many other uses like- Phones, PDA's, Disc..etc
I found DVDFab a lot easier to set up or use for MAIN MOVIE ripping, with DVD Decrypter you have to set up a lot of options to change it to MAIN MOVIE ripping.

This is all I have for now, if you need help just ask in this thread.
Also be aware that I am using all these programs on a PC using Windows XP Professional, I am unable to verify if they work on a MAC

I will be adding extra information as I test out different converters and rippers.
