I have an 8 GB iPod touch bought 2 weeks ago from today, it came pre installed (from what I can tell by restoring it) with 3.1.1, Several websites dedicated to Jailbreaking tell me its a 3G iPod Touch but both Apple's website and wikipage hold up that no 8GB Models exist in the 3G release.

    Any information is greatly appreciated.

    its a 3G 8 gig ipod touch

difference between old and new is that the new one has less battery life and old one has more and new one comes patched and comes with 3.1.1 and it doesn't have voice controll. they call it the updated ipod touch 2g but i consider it as a 3g because the battery is different and its patched. (Dont get confused it does not have voice controll or new procesor you can just call it an updated 2g [althought its really a 3g ipod touchs 8gb models should be considered a different ipod touch family member like iPhone and IPod touch. and then they should call it iPod Touch 3G 8GB lol])

Hope that helps also many online resellers call it 3G iPod touch (Example: Amazon.com)

Shamko, Is that a serious statement or an attempt to brick a newbies iPod?

    Thats a serious question...

I done this on my 2G before.
There is no 8GB 3g ipod (as far as i know) so it should work fine.
If something goes wrong itunes would notice that and stop that.. after that you can simply restore.

I've had no luck rolling it down firmware, iTunes gives me error 20 after unpacking the firmware and refuses any suggested technique I've found on the internet so far, including using iTunes 8.0-8.2 and renaming the firmware.

I'll give 2.2.1 a shot now and see where it lands me.

    2.2.1 Is a bust, error 20.

That's because the difference between the old 8gb and the new is that you can't downgrade the new one.

Technically there is no 8gb 3g according to apple. But as far as I'm concerned it was re-released alongside the 3g's so it is a 3g even if no significant changes were made.
