Can the ipod touch connect to any WiFi connection (like the one at my home) or only certain hotspots?

It should work with any open WIFI network

I use it on my home and office WIFI networks that are password protected. I can also use it at a local coffee shop with a open WIFI. For some reason another coffee shop that makes you sign it on a web browser does not like Safari on the iPod Touch, it works fine with my MacBook however

    Both.

If you have WiFi at your house or you go to lets say a Starbucks/Airport, you should be able to access the tubes.

ANY 802.11 b or g Wi-Fi router, access point, or hot spot will work just fine, provided you have the credentials to enter the network.

you can enter any open networks...if they are password protected youll need the password, to access and some others might have captive portals but thats why theres Safari, to log into those portals

The wifi reciever also seems particularly strong. Or at least, it's stronger than I'm used to: as I can pick up wireless in places that I used to not be able to before.

My MacBook is the same way; Apple does a good job there.

its due to the antenna placement. Apple did the right thing by sacrificing form for function with that little black cutout for the antenna. the iPoT would have horrible reception otherwise.
