Is this possible anymore without having to mutlitask them first, then close them?

Try holding the home button when you want to close an app to force quit. (Unsure if this still works in 4.0)

    I'm wondering the same thing.

It gets annoying while looking through 20 apps to find one and having to constantly stop others.

hold power button until the slide to power off appears then hold the home button and it will force quit the current running app.

Not just recents, I wanna be able to CHOOSE what gets backgrounded and what doesn't.

Hold their icon until they start to wiggle, then close them using the X

i think the thing is that all those aren't actually backgrounded as not even all apps support it just that it shows recent apps too
