I look after my new ipod touch 2nd gen very carefully. It has only ever been in it's case or my hand and yet there are several minor scratches on the chrome bezel but none on the back. Has anyone else found this area scratches easily?

Yeah...I have the exact same problem.
    I originally bought a 16gb 2g ipod from costco.
I then dropped it and returned it back.

I then bought a 32gb one, and when I closed a application on it, the screen froze, then it went black, and then when I tried to start it up again, it didn't.
So I returned it back again.

Now I currently have another 32gb one, except the top chrome bezel (as you call it) had scrapes all over it, making it have a rough appearence. It was like this right out of the box, I'm starting to wonder if the packaging did this, but heh...I'll probably end up returning my ipod again

My 2g has been in a "case" since day one. The only signs of wear and tear it has are small scuffs on the back. Bezel looks like I just opened the thing. I'm just curious how those scuffs got there if it was in a case.

Well you would expect it wouldn't you?
It's the same material used on the back of it as well, and judging from the iPhone's there's were scratched as well

Haha, I didn't even turn on my iPod before making sure to have the screen protector in place and the case nice and snug. The back of it has never even been touched, so its still new.

i don't really care about the back of it
it is going to scratch regardless of using a case or not
if you always have a case on it, your ipod will probably overheat once in a while

    doesn't bother me too much
i'd be pissed if i had a permanent scar on the front of it though
