I am currently on the last 9 months of my AT&T plan and have the chance to get a 3gs for $100 so I wanted to take advantage of this and just use it. If I pop in my sim card from my phone will it work right off the bat? Also, I have heard that AT&T will begin charging me for the 3g service whether I ask for it or not, what is the cheapest option for me if I want to use mostly wifi (which is abundant here at work, home and hotspots throughout Long Island which are all free)

I guess I just want to know what is the cheapest way to use this phone on a current ATT plan?

FYI - the iPhone is activated already and I don't want to extend my ATT contract

Also aside from the USB cable what else should I make sure about the phone? Does it need a SIM in it already?

it would need a sim, but att would charge you extra for an iphone, but it wouldn't extend your contract

Any idea how much more? I'll give them a call tonight but I hate when companies try to upsell or give me BS like I can't do something I know others do

    You could unlock it
And not get a data plan

By unlocking it and no dataplan I would just turn off 3g and use wifi? ATT doesn't get a red flag on that scenario? I have jailbroken my itouch several times, is the process much more involved?

By unlocking it simply means you can use it on any carrier you want. If you don't want data safest bet is not to tell ATT you have an iPhone, turn cellular data and 3G off from settings, and create a fake APN profile.

How do you fake the APN profile? An app on Cydia?

    It's $25. $15 is for 200 MB.

To fake an APN you either change it in the settings app when the sim is removed, or you visit www.unlockit.co.nz from mobile safari and download one of the fake APN packages
