Is it possible to change the totally fugly default image for albums with no cover art? I gather it's called noartplaceholder.png, but I can't find any way to change it on a non-jailbroken iPod, and I'd really rather not jailbreak if I could avoid it. Are there any apps, either for PC or in the App Store, that allow you to replace it with a custom image?

No. You can only do this via jailbreaking.

Ah well, thanks for the info. I've worked out how to cover most of the tracks involved anyway, by sorting my library by album name and applying a new image to all the blank ones, which gets me a few hundred sorted in one go.

Why don't you just jailbreak it? It doesn't do anything bad to your iPod and you could change that image plus MUCH MUCH more. :/
