I tried to sort out my icons with categories, and I wanted to get rid of one. So I deleted the apps from that specific category, and then deleted the category. I couldn't find my settings, and SMB prefs app so my iPod was basically handicapped. I tried to fix it with Total Commander, but nothing worked. So I restored it. How do I prevent this from occurring again?

In Categories, disable the feature that auto-hides the icons. (You can hide them in Customize later). That way you avoid plist corruption, because there is only one app (Customize) changing the icon order.

Do you have acces to installer?
If you do, reinstall "poof" and just unhide your apps.

You can probably also find poof online or someone could upload it for you if you dont have installer.

honestly the only way I've found to keep Categories from messing up my Tpuch is to not install it. Seriously I feel like every time I've tried to use it I have ended up restoring.

I felt that way for quite a bit, before I disabled the "hide apps" feature in Categories. Now when I add an app to a category, the original icon remains on my homescreen. That way, I just hide it with Customize. You will find this to be much more stable.
