Okay so my friend has a 1st Gen iPod Touch version 1.1.4. Everytime I try to put his iPod into DFU mode iTunes says that there isn't enough memory or something. I have no idea what it's talking about so any help is appreciated.

I think it was talking about there not being enough memory.

Ok you're probably doing it wrong. It goes like this. It has to be exact, otherwise it will not work.

1.HOLD power button for 5 Seconds
2.HOLD POWER+HOME 10 Seconds DO NOT LET GO OF POWER BUTTON
3.RELEASE Power Button HOLD HOME for 30 seconds

It shouldn't even matter what iTunes says. But if anything I would download version 8.0 of iTunes or Lower.

1.1.4 is super old and iTunes also prevents people from doing anything to their iPod's SO I would just do that.

If it still doesn't work. Just restore it. You say you can't put it into DFU mode. But i'm sure you can restore with another version of iTunes and Original 1.1.4 firmware.

You can get all firmware you desire here.

I think that link is illegal... most of the firmware there is fine but some are payed for. I think you might wanna remove that link just in case
