Can you still buy the 3G and not be a AT&T customer?

Hey guys, I was wondering, I'm a Verizon customer, but of course I have my wonderful iPod touch.

I recently received an iPhone for free (don't ask) and I came to the conclusion I'd sell it to my good friend who has AT&T and is in dying need of a new phone. I unlocked it, so it worked for him. But just the other day, he was at a concert and someone just snatched it from his back pocket. He is still gonna pay me for it, but I was wondering, if he gave me the money for it, (which he still owes me $230), could I take some of that and go to the AT&T store when the 3G comes out and just buy one just for the hell of it? Or is that not possible? Or should I give one of my friends the money and have them go get it for me? What should I do? I just want one to f*** around with and have some fun. Someone help, thanks guys.
