Everyone is saying if you have a 8gb MC device, you can downgrade it no matter what. I bought my device with 3.1.2 pre-installed to it, so i should be able to downgrade to that right? If i put my iPod into DFU mode and try shift+restore, it gives me an error every single time, then i have to re-install 4.0 and I'm stuck here

By firmware file, do you mean the IPSW? If that's the case, it's iPod2,1_3.1.3_7E18_restore

If you have iTunes 9.2 downgrade it to 9.0 or lower then place the ipod in DFU mode and restore

Delete the iTunes library folder, or maybe it was to replace a couple of files in it to successfuly downgrade it. I don't know wait for someone else to tell you

To Downgrade go to C:\Users\(NAME HERE)\Music\iTunes or something similar to that and copy all the files that are not in folders to a BACKUP folder. They should have the names of "iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library (DATE HERE).itl etc... Then delete those files[NOT THE FOLDERS] and uninstall then install a "lower" version of iTunes.
EDIT: OH and after you finish downgrading replace all the new "iTunes Library.itl" and such files with those of which you backed up.

If you have any playlists you may also want to back that up because they will be GONE...
