This is a discussion thread for the "Can We Call the Microsoft Surface a Dud Yet?" story posted on the front page.
Right, because people will be willing to fork over $999 for a Surface tablet w/ Windows 8 Pro + a Touch Cover keyboard over spending $999 on a MacBook Air (or even a Windows laptop)? I don't think so.
I didn't say they would, but we should probably wait for the egg to hatch before we start going around saying the chickens dead.
Slash the price by $150 . Slap an open-source project on it. Get Goolge Play up and running on this beast (and not BlueStacks). All will be well.
I don't think it's quite a Kin. At least the Surface offers some interesting and useful features that work decently well. The Kin couldn't claim any of that. But yes, I do think that the first generation of the Surface is a dud. It isn't because it's a bad product, or because Windows is awful. It's two-fold: first, low availability. It's still hardly available anywhere, and in places like Best Buy it just isn't represented well. The second is its price: it's too expensive. It can't compete with the Nexus 10 in terms of specs, let alone the iPad. It should be $399, but preferably lower with its current specs. The keyboard case should be cheaper. Charge the same for the Type Cover, but the Touch Cover is overpriced. The Surface Pro will solve the intermittent performance issues, but at the expense of the battery life. "Half" what the RT version sees? So about four to five hours - pathetic. The second generation of Surface, along with the upcoming Windows "Blue" update coming next year (which looks to be more along the lines of an update that would be seen on Android or iOS), should make for an interesting device.
It's a fail. Overpriced. It's performance is terrible. It is packed full of great features, but they didn't get the hardware to run it nicely. I can pull up at least half a dozen reviews of the Surface where you can see lag even with hardly anything open. The next generation of the Surface should be really good, but honestly if it's going to have windows 8 for five years, the user experience is going to go downhill because Apple will be on iOS 10 or 11 by then. Yes, that's another thing. The software won't see an upgrade for some time.
the updates since the release has boosted the performance on the Surface with Windows RT. my sis has it at home and i can definitely notice the smoothness and faster app launching than when i first used it.
Everybody moaned at how crummy the iPad was and look how that turned out even with the high price tag.
