The last time i jailbroke an ipod, it was on a 1st gen ipod touch and the firmware is 2.2.1, so it's been quite a while, i never update since then because i thought, if it ain't broken, why fix it?

We'll i just bought a new iphone 16 gb 3gs and it is running on version 3.1

Since this forum has been great to me in the past, i decided to come back here for help.

Is the version 3.1 jailbreakable? I've never had any experience with the iphone. What is the best way to jailbreak it? To which version? which is the most stable at the moment? Which itunes version is the most stable? etc etc

    Thanks in advance guys

iTunes 9.0.2 is best iTunes if you're running 3.1 or newer
    Use blackra1n (http://blackra1n.com) to jailbreak 3.1.x
If you got a new 3GS, it may have the new bootrom, thus it is tethered

... If it's tethered, don't bother jailbreaking. You can all argue with me on this, but it's worst to tether on a iPhone because it could 'black-out' when you actually need to use it.

    ^ I agree.

    A tethered phone?

    Gross.

    A tethered media player?

    OK, not great.

Hello, what is tethered? How do i know if my phone is tethered, here are some further information if it helps.

    1. I just did a hardware upgrade on my old phone, my new monthly plan is the same as my old one, no data.

    2. I bought it at the apple official store.

    3. It is a 3GS 16GB

EDIT: i did a basic check (serial code) and mine is 938 so i think i may have a chance!

Well, a jailbreak being tethered means if you turn off your device, it will not turn back on by itself. You will need to run the jailbreak program again to turn it back on (everything will still be the same). This could be inconvenient for a phone. And to see if it is tethered, jailbreak and turn it off. If it doesn't turn back on, then it's tethered, but you should know beforehand.

Whoo, just to confirm, i want into DFU mode then checked out Device Manager, Apple Mobile Device USB Driver and under the Device Instance ID, i checked to see if there is any "iboot" and to my luck, there isn't.

As far as I know, it should be safe to jailbreak right?

(this is surprising as the new boot rom came out over a month ago!

    (just waiting for confirmation )

Oh and I'm running on 3.1 firmware, do i upgrade to 3.1.2 through itunes? Or download it myself elsewhere?

    It's safe to jailbreak.

And blackra1n works with 3.1, 3.1.1, and 3.1.2, so no need to update.
