The sleep/wake button on my iphone is broken, and as of now it is legit. I want to jailbreak so i can dl ihome, which i heard, can lock/sleep/turn off the ipod.

However, i have a couple of questions.

How am i supposed to jailbreak if I cant press the power button to force it into DFU mode?
How do i turn it on? ( I guess i could live with it on always)

And since i got it from a friend, and i have a ATT sim card with a data plan, will i have to pay anything extra?

Would i need to unlock? What benefits would that provide me?

Also, once jailbroken(if possible), is there some sort of toggle that i could use to make the silent switch the lock/power button?

Which button are you referring to as the sleep / wake button? The one on the top of the phone (the power button), or the one on the front of the phone (the home button)?

    Is this a 2G or a 3G?

I am not sure there is much you can do; you can still put it into restore mode with the home button but I'm not sure how you'd power it off for that.

You can try restoring it to a custom firmware that would include the jailbreak and then I'd download SBSettings (that will allow reboot and power off).

You might want to look into replacing the broken button; again this depends on a 2G or a 3G but it is not that hard to do.

You have to be able to use home and power to go into DFU mode.

Assuming it is just the button that is broken it is fairly easy on the 2G. You can find the button on ebay and all you have to do is separate the back from the phone (this is the hardest part) and then it should be easy enough to swap the button which is attached to the top of the case.

Did you try restoring your iPhone before? Sometimes restore fixes things like that..

If it hasn't been jailbroken yet, use the warranty and get it fixed.
