I'm on OSX 10.5.6, and don't want to spend hours downloading the 10.5.7 update right now.

10.5.6 isn't DFU friendly, so I'm wondering if I can just do a shift restore without the DFU?

Does the Touch absolutely have to be in DFU mode to restore to custom firmware?

    why? and no

first what kind of internet connection do you have
the 10.5.7 update weights roughly about 300mb, with broadband you can download that in in about 5 minutes

Now second: dfu mode works fine in 10.5.6 if you connect your device to a usb hub port. like your keyboard for instance.

    Good luck

If your iPod is already running a custom firmware, it doesn't have to be in DFU. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure it does.

I'd love to know what kind of internet service will download 440MB in 5 minutes. I have Mobile Broadband, which is usually about 512Kb/s. It was showing a 3-5 hour download.

I'm on a MacBook, so no keyboard hub.
  5. try this...

well i am on optimum broadband which has about 10000kps download bandwidth 30$ month

i exaggerate a little bit with 5 minutes, but really i downloaded the whole thing in less than 10 minutes.
