Gmail is better than all but to answer your question with the current mail program and settings I would doubt it

Yes, mine works...I don't know about yours, but mine is set as
    host name : pop-server.gt.rr.com
i think the outgoing is smtp-server.gt.rr.com but i could be wrong, i use mail.utexas.edu because i am on campus

The SSL error usually means that you've got the username/password wrong. Don't try to connect to *.gt.rr.com - Roadrunner has server for each region - for example, I'm connecting to *.indy.rr.com. You need to use the last part of your email address to determine it (like johnsmith@indy.rr.com would use pop-server.indy.rr.com and smtp-server.indy.rr.com)

    A) Your incoming server is pop-server.XXX.rr.com where XXX is for your region (i.e. central florida is pop-server.cfl.rr.com; upstate NY is pop-server.nycap.rr.com; etc.)
    B) Your outgoing server is smtp-server.XXX.rr.com where XXX is for your region (same as above)
    C) To send properly, you MUST be connected to the router that is using the RR internet access. To protect against spam, RR uses an IP-based protection system. To get around this, you can always use another email SMTP server (like if you have a godaddy account or college account.)
