Well, I am a newbie here, so please excuse me if this question is obvious.

I wish to buy an ipod touch which has firmware/OS version 2.x, the reason being I
need to use it to test some iphone software that I have developed.

Now, there are only ipods with OS version 3.1 available in the market. Luckily, I found
one vendor having an older ipod touch. From the serial number of the ipod touch, I can
infer that it was manufactured in the 26 th week of 2009 which comes to the week of
June 22 nd 09. My question is what OS version will it have ? I see that OS 3.0 was
released on June 18 th, and ipod users were asked to pay for updation.

My question is : What OS versions would ipods manufactured between June 18 th 09
and September when 3 rd gen ipod touch was launched would have ?
Would it be 2.x or 3.0 ? Can this question be definitively answered without opening the
    ipod touch box ?

    Thanks for any pointers.

    regards,
    Samir

I'd say just buy the newest iPod Touch....

You can always use the simulator for 2.x

He needs to make it compatible with 3.1 though.
