Can I build Cydia from source and use it on my iPhone OS 4.0 3Gs?

Does it have to be run as root?

These are the questions that haunt me.

    Why would you want to?

    Just asking, not criticizing.

cydia runs as root and so you can only deploy it to your iphone using a patched installd file = jailbreak required
you have to bypass codesign and kernel checks so yeah...patched kernel required too

    No.

Your first problem is that you will not be able to compile it. Your second problem would be that the application would be in ~/Applications instead of /Applications. Your third problem is allowing it to be run by the OS. Your fourth problem is, failing to have access to the filesystem, you will not be able to place things such as apt, on which Cydia relies.
