I have an ipad 3 and I already have a case but it is bulky and folds over the front. I want a shell type thing that just protects the back and does just that, I can't find any that don't have a front cover connected to it. I just want the ipad to be one piece. but I don't know any names, so don't know where to start searching.

Perhaps you could take a look at the ifrogz backbone case

The otter box defender is great! I got mine on amazon, the black version was on sale so I got it for around $40. It is bulky with the extra shell on, but after dropping and breaking my first iPad, I feel that a little bulk is needed with these delicate devices. The case has a hard case layer, and a hard rubber layer on top, with a built in screen cover that doesn't effect usability or the looks at all. It comes with a shell that snaps onto either the front or back, with magnets that activate the Smart Cover function as well. I generally don't use it because it's just extra weight, but it is handy and reassuring when I'm out and about to have that option. They are normally around $100, but the black version was and still is (I think) on sale so if you want a premium case with great protection, and you get the option to have extra protection on, if you'd prefer not to, again the bulkiness isn't that noticeable. I like that you can choose to have the screen covered or not covered without the piece being actually attached :) sorry for the long reply, but it's always good to have a lot of info when it comes to cases, they protect our babies!
EDIT: that candy shell case looks very similar to the otter box defender minus the snap on extra cover
