Can a 720p HDTV do 1080i?

Well, today my family picked up our very first HDTV, and despite my best efforts to convince my dad to buy a Full HD 1080p set, he decided to stay on the cheaper side and buy a 720p.

When I got home, I set it all up, and plugged in my PS3 via an HDMI cable, now since I normally had it hooked up to crappy analog a/v plugs, the PS3 popped up saying it detected an HDMI connection and asked if I'd like to use it, and I of course selected yes.

Now here comes my question, the PS3 scanned for what output to send to the TV, and it came back with the Highest Output being 1080i so I selected to use that.

Now my question is, Why is my 720p TV telling my PS3 it can process 1080i? I read online that it will accept that resolution, it will just convert it to it's native 720p. So, if the tv automatically converts 1080i to 720p anyways, shouldn't it be telling the PS3 that it's highest resolution is 720p?

Just curious how this is working. Thanks!

Maybe all 720p TVs are 1080i compatible?

This is the same with our old Sony TV and my Xbox, but we got a 1080p one a few months ago

Ya that's what I'm trying to figure out.

It seems to me though, if it REALLY can do 1080i, why don't they market them as being 1080i TV's and not 720p?

you should use 720p rather than 1080i. It is a better picture.

you will get a little better performance running at 720p. For the TV to accept 1080, it has to downscale this picture to 720p. running your PS3 at 720 will be a tooouuch snappier as there is less image to output, resulting in less processing power needed to display the image.
