Well I've been looking on craigslist and I've been thinking of buying an iPhone 3g. The thing is that I have cell phone service, but it doe'snt have an unlimited data plan. I was wondering if there's anyway to turn off the ability to stream data through the cell phone connection. (of course so I can still call people, recieve calls, and get texts, and so on and so forth

I'm guessing you have to jailbreak? (I'll jailbreak I just dont want to depend on the jailbreak really)

You can also go to www.unlockit.co.nz from safari on thr iPhone and therr it will let you download fake APN settings to disable data

You just delete for example 'epc.tmobile.com'. Just delete that from the field and your done.
